“Alien: Romulus” Echo Probe (from opening scene)
Together with Chris Gilmour from Vectar Sets Manchester we built the “Echo Probe” for opening scene of the recently released 20th Century Fox Movie “Alien: Romulus”, based on the designs from Matthew Savage (Concept Artist; also credit for header image). The probe was completely made of fully recyclable Re-board® material, constructed, cut and pre-assembled in Manchester, UK and shipped to Budapest, Hungary for final assembly.
Creating the multiple-part chassis from scratch to final delivery took only 11 days, since our work schedule wouldn’t allow us to go to Manchester earlier. But thanks to the outstanding material (Re-board) and great cutting technology (the probe was fully cut on a Kongsberg Table), we managed to get it done in time and even had time for a pint or two.
The photos only show parts of our work since the probe was made of multiple pieces for filming purposes. All elements from Vectar Sets were integrated into the designated openings in the chassis, which in it of itself consisted of 4 main parts (2 top parts, a bottom frame and the bottom) and several smaller parts.
After final assembly in Budapest the probe was equipped with monitors, lights and a robot in the middle by the team in Hungary.
Working with Chris from Vector was truly a joy. We admire his work greatly! It is not often that we get to work with an artist of such magnitude and dedication to detail.
